['taʊnʃɪpɑːt, englisch] die, -, vielfältige Kunstströmungen in den Vorstädten südafrikanischer Metropolen, mit denen sich seit der Mitte der 1970er-Jahre der kulturelle Kampf gegen die weiße Vorherrschaft formulierte. Neben politischen Bildern (Paul Sibisi, * 1948) wurde die Township-Art auch zum Spiegelbild alltäglicher Lebensszenen (Gerard Sekoto, * 1913, ✝ 1993; Peter Clarke, * 1929) und ein Medium zur Weiterentwicklung traditioneller Kunstformen, so der Skulptur (Noria Mabasa, * 1938; Phutuma Seoka, * 1922) wie der Bemalung von Hauswänden mit geometrischen Mustern. Zu den Künstlern der Township-Art zählt auch der Namibier John Muafangejo (* 1943, ✝ 1987).
